Sew a Loose Button Before It Disappears

Match the original position
Check any remaining button marks and compare the closure with neighboring buttons. Use a button and thread suited to the garment.
Build a firm attachment
Thread the needle securely and make several passes through the button and fabric. Avoid pulling so tight that the fabric puckers.
Test the closure
Fasten and unfasten the garment gently. If the fabric is tearing around the button, reinforce it or seek a repair rather than stitching into weak cloth.
Can I use a spare button that looks different?
Yes, if it fits the buttonhole and keeps the closure secure; check the garment's other buttons for a suitable spare.
